ชูชกเดินทางไปยังอาศรม พระเวสสันดร ในเวลาจวนค่ำ
แต่ไม่คิดจะเข้าเฝ้าทูลขอสองพระกุมารในเวลานั้น
ด้วยเกรงว่าพระนางมัทรีจะขัดขวางตามวิสัยผู้เป็นแม่
รอให้พระนางมัทรีเสด็จไปหาผลไม้
และ พระเวสสันดร ประทับอยู่โดยลำพังในเวลารุ่งขึ้น จึงค่อยเข้าไปขอ
ในคืนนั้น พระนางมัทรีทรงพระสุบิน ด้วยเทวดามาบอกเหตุว่า
มีบุรุษร่างกายกำยำ ผิวดำ ถือดาบสองมือ
พังประตูอาศรมเข้าไปฉุดกระชากพระนาง
ควักพระเนตร ตัดพระพาหาสิ้นทั้งซ้ายขวา
ท้ายสุดผ่าพระอุระ ควักดวงพระหทัยแล้วหนีไป
พระนางทรงตระหนักดีว่าทรงฝันร้าย
จึงกังวลพระทัยยิ่งนัก และไม่วางพระทัย
แม้ พระเวสสันดร จะทรงทนายเลี่ยงไปว่า เป็นธาตุวิปริต
และทรงปลอบพระนางให้ทรงหายหวาดกลัวและคลายกังวล
ครั้นรุ่งเช้า พระนางก็ยังคงเสด็จไปหาผลไม้ ดังเช่นที่ทรงปฏิบัติทุกวัน
ฝ่าย ชูชก สบโอกาสดังคิด
จึงเร่งเข้าเฝ้า พระเวสสันดร แล้วทูลขอสองพระกุมาร
แม้ พระเวสสันดร จะทรงอาลัยพระโอรสพระธิดาเพียงใด
ก็ต้องตัดพระทัยเพื่อพระสัมมาสัมโพธิญาณ
อันจะยังประโยชน์สุขให้แก่มวลมนุษย์
ยิ่งกว่าสุขของพระองค์เอง
ทั้งสองพระกุมารก็เข้าพระทัยในเหตุผลของพระบิดา
จึงยอมเสด็จไปกับ ชูชก
ทั้งสามพระองค์ต้องทรงกลั้นอาลัย
พระเวสสันดร ต้องสะกดพระโทสะ
ด้วย ชูชก ลงมือเฆี่ยนตีสองพระกุมาร
ตั้งแต่ยังไม่ทันพ้นพระอาศรม
ก่อนจะทรงให้สองพระกุมารกับชูชกไป
ได้ทรงตั้งค่าตัวไว้ว่า
หากมีผู้ใดต้องการไถ่ตัวสองพระกุมารให้พ้นทาส
พระชาลี นั้นทรงตั้งไว้พันตำลึงทอง
พระกัณหา เป็นหญิง นอกจากทรัพย์พันตำลึงทองแล้ว
ยังต้องประกอบด้วยข้าทาสชายหญิง ช้าง ม้า โคคาวี และโคอศุภราชอีกอย่างละร้อย
